Letter and book grouping pertaining to the Wyoming Artillerists of Wilkes Barre, PA. This militia company was formed in 1842 and saw extensive service throughout the Mexican War.
Book - Record of the Wyoming Artillerists, Lieut. Col D.C. Kitchen, Tunkhannock, PA 1874, 90 pages. This is a rare book regarding this famous northeastern Pennsylvania Militia unit. The book focuses on its organization and participation in events from 1842 as well as its service in the Mexican War. At the beginning of the Civil War, the Wyoming Artillerists became Co. F of the 8th PA Infantry (3 months). Overall condition is excellent with original green cardboard covers. First book of this kind I have ever encountered.
Letter & Patriotic Cover - This is a very early Civil War letter written by Benjamin F. Louder of Co. F. 8th PA Infantry (Wyoming Artillerists) and is dated June 3, 1861 from Camp Sliter (near Chambersburg). Written in light pencil, the letter is full of exciting news of different units coming into camp, etc., Mulligan's Desparados (hard cases from the State Prison) escorting general Patterson to camp, 1st Regiment (First Defenders - Allentown Rifles), bad food, etc. The patriotic envelope is postmarked Chambersburg May 18, 1861 and the handwriting appears to be Louder's. A nice small grouping of Pennsylvania (Luzerne County) material.
Civil War Early Letter Written by Lt. John W. Martin - 78th PA Vol.

Exceptional early Civil War letter written by John W. Martin from Camp Wood and dated December 26, 1861. Extremely well written letter in which Martin gives his sympathetics to departed loved ones of one Mr. W. Wallace. He also describes his brigade arriving at this camp last Tuesday and the 32nd Indiana having a skirmish with the "rebbles" on the other side of Green River. His unit arrived too late to participate since the "rebbles" had fled but indicated that the Union loss was 13 killed, 32 wounded and 7 missing with the enemy loss at about 100 killed. On picket duty where the battle had been fought, 9 more of the enemy dead were found along with "a good many dead horses on the battle ground". Martin also mentions a Christmans celebration and invitation to dinner at the table of General Negley and members of his company in the hospital at Louisville.
John W. Martin enlisted as 1st. Lieutenant in Co. A. 78th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on August 26, 1861. He was mustered out on November 11, 1864 and was wounded at Stones River, December 31, 1862 and promoted on September 1, 1863 to Captain.
