Quarter plate ambrotype of standing Federal with arm around musket that could be a Model 1855. He wears an oil cloth cap cover as well as a Rhode Island hat insignia, white buff shoulder sling with outline of cartridge box and a plain square brass belt plate. No glass - never had one and the ambrotype is sealed as it were a daguerrotype. Has two names scratched into back plate. Young Confederate Image - 1/9th Cased Tintype

No doubt a young confederate image with what appears to be home made eppaulettes with stars sewn on each side. The young rebel is wearing the often seen confederate battle shirt and cap with insignia. The image is housed in a 1/9th leatherette case. Some emulsion on image but does not detract overall. If you collect confederate images than you should consider this one.

Superb quarter plate ambrotype of Albert Wintermute of Co. E, 3rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Image shows full standing view of Wintermute holding a Model 1842 musket with bayonet affixed wearing a great coat and kepi. He also is equipped with a full set of accoutrements including belt with US oval plate, canteen, haversack (just partially visible), cartridge box, bayonet scabbard and knapsack (sling strap visible around upper right arm) and blanket roll showing. Overall, the image has great visual appeal. The quarter plate half case is in poor condition, however, a forty or fifty year old label detailing the identification of Wintermute and unit was pasted to the outside of the case by a family member.
Albert Wintermute enlisted in the 3rd Ohio on April 24, 1861 and was mustered out on June 21, 1864. The unit saw extensive service in the western theater and suffered heavy losses at Perryville, KY and Stone's River, TN. National Archives military and pension records accompany this image.
